Main Asset Classes
Asset classes are groupings of investments that are simlar in characteristics and are governed by the same laws and regulations. The different groupings are: stocks, bonds and cash equivalents.
The stock market is where you can buy shares of various companies. You could invest in equity indexes such as the S&P500 and the NASDAQ100 or build up a portfolio of indivual shares in companies you believe in, reaping the profits as they appreciate. Bonds are fixed income securities, they allow you to earn an income on money invested, you are essentially lending your money to the government for interest. Cash equivalents include: Treasury bills, bank certificates of deposit and other money market instruments.
Investing in these assets and building a portfolio may help you turn a profit. We'll provide a guide here.
Real Assets
Although these assets do not fall under the main 3 asset classes, they are still very much assets and will/can generate good profits. These are tangible assets: real estate (houses), precious metals, commodities (grains, oil, gas), equipment etc which can be held as part of a portfolio. They help in diversifying and spreading risk, as they do not strongly correlate to financial assets such as stocks & bonds.
The value of these assets are pulled from their physical qualities. They are more stable but far more illiquid than financial assets. The Investing segment will cover these assets and how to invest in them.
Cryptocurrency
Bitcoin, Ethereum (and possibly Dogecoin) are among the most popular cryptocurrencies. As of today (12/01/2022),there are 9003 crypto tokens listed on the CoinMarketCap website. Certain coins have actual use cases and aim to solve a specific problems, whilst others are termed "meme coins" and thrive off speculation and hype (these can still be profitable due to the large/faithful communities backing them). The crypto marketplace is highly volatile and are broadly classed as risky investments.
This hosts a large number of opportunities to invest and grow your capital that has already made many wealthy. Education in the space is paramount.
Other Assets
Trading cards, designer handbags and intangible assets are all part of the list of unusual and less spoken about assets. They are still great investment opportunities but require a bit more digging and an understanding of the niche marketplaces involved.
We will uncover some of these in this blog space.
